Overview

The increasing integration of renewable energy into the electric power grid leads to growing demand for energy storage. The Energy System Integration (ESI) platform at the Paul Scherer Institute (PSI) is investigating power-to-gas energy storage schemes, where electricity is converted into hydrogen, stored, and on demand converted back to electricity.

Our research at IfA aims to analyze potential applications for power-to-gas storage devices. In this project, we consider applying peak-shaving methods to reduce the maximum energy consumption of a building. This requires an online algorithm to determine system control inputs based on forecasts of the a building's electricity demand and PV panel electricity production.

Project Description

We will use stochastic optimization methods to make optimal operational decisions. For this to operate in real time, we require estimates of future electricity demand and local production that should adapt to measurements and forecasts as new information is available.

This project will involve both modeling and computational parts. First, existing models of building demand and PV inflow will be adapted for a specific building, and integrated into a stochastic optimization framework. Second, the computation will be streamlined and readied for real-time operation.
