Abstract:

The widespread emergence of residential photovoltaic (PV) systems connected to the lowvoltage distribution grid entails major challenges for voltage stability and line congestion. To address this problem, we present a computational tool for solving multi-period optimal power flow (OPF) problems in distribution grids. The model is based on nonlinear AC power flow equations. Conic relaxations are used to obtain a convex optimization problem. We introduce computational improvements that can significantly enhance performance and numerical stability for existing problem formulations. The software framework can be used to assess the potential of various smart grid technologies in a unified way. We consider among others the optimal dispatch of PV inverters and the placement of distributed storage in case studies based on two real-world Swiss distribution grids.
