Abstract: “The Influence of Reuel Shinnar on Process Control Research and Practice” The Influence of Reuel Shinnar on Process Control Research and Practice Reuel Shinnar's research covered a wide range of areas from reaction engineering to process design, from criminology to economics. In my talk I will focus on some of his most important ideas in process control, which he communicated not only through his papers but many hours of personal discussions. In the 1970s he identified model uncertainty as the main reason for the failure of optimal control in practice and proposed new objective functions which lead to robust designs. Eventually, these ideas became the basis of a new mathematical framework for optimal controller design (H∞ Synthesis), which captured the attention of a generation of gifted theorists. In the second part of my talk I will describe how we have extended process control concepts, in particular Model Predictive Control, to make them suitable to ultra-fast processes like the scheduling of multi-core processors, Atomic force microscopes and power electronics. |
